Knee Pain Q&A

What causes knee pain?

Knee pain can come from a number of injuries and medical conditions. Your knees are made up of bone, cartilage, ligaments, muscle, and other tissue. Damage or disease to any of these structures can result in knee pain. Some common causes of knee pain include:

ACL injuries

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments in your knee — and a common source of injury. ACL injuries occur when the ligament is stretched beyond its normal limits becomes sprained or torn.

ACL injuries are common in sports like soccer, basketball, and football, where you put stress on the structures of the knee. Sudden stops, awkward jumps, and collisions to the knee can all result in ACL injuries.

Fractures

Falls, car accidents, and other types of collisions can all result in painful knee fractures. The  patella (kneecap) is a common source of fracture that can make it difficult to walk or straighten your knee. Issues like osteoporosis (weakened bones) can increase your risk of knee fractures.

Torn meniscus

One of the most common types of knee injuries is a torn meniscus. The menisci are pieces of rubbery cartilage that sit between the thigh and shinbone. A torn meniscus is caused by activities that require forceful twisting or rotating of the knee.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, difficulty straightening the knee, and a popping sensation. Gradual wear and tear on the cartilage in your knees (osteoarthritis) can increase your risk of a torn meniscus.

Additional causes of knee pain include:

  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Dislocation
  • Arthritis
  • Iliotibial band syndrome

Effectively treating your condition requires an accurate diagnosis. Before beginning treatment, your doctor performs an in-depth evaluation to determine the root cause of your knee pain.

How is knee pain diagnosed?

360 Orthopedics uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat knee pain. To begin your diagnosis, your doctor performs a physical exam and discusses your medical history as well as any recent injuries.

The team provides on-site X-rays and MRIs to quickly and accurately determine the cause of your knee pain. The team also offers electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Once you’ve been diagnosed, your doctor works with you to develop your individualized treatment plan.

What treatments are available for my knee pain?

In many cases, your doctor can effectively relieve your knee pain with conservative care. Depending on your condition, conservative treatment may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Injections
  • Splint, cast, or brace
  • Physical therapy

In some cases, orthopedic conditions may require surgical intervention. At 360 Orthopedics, our experienced team offers a range of advanced solutions — including minimally invasive procedures such as arthroscopy and joint replacement (arthroplasty).

Advanced Surgical Options for Knee Pain

If conservative treatment hasn’t resolved your knee pain, surgical intervention may be the next step. At 360 Orthopedics, we provide a full spectrum of advanced knee surgery options, including:

  • Minimally invasive knee surgery
  • Robotic-assisted arthroscopy
  • Robotic total and partial knee replacement

Our experienced joint replacement specialists — Dr. Jeff Silverstein and Dr. William A. Mahoney — use advanced robotic surgical systems to perform highly personalized procedures with enhanced accuracy and precision. These technologies help improve implant positioning and alignment, reduce tissue trauma, and promote faster recovery.

Benefits of robotic-assisted knee surgery include:

  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Improved joint function and implant longevity
  • Shorter hospital stays and faster return to daily activities
