Regenerative Medicine (PRP) Q&A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a cutting-edge branch of medicine that focuses on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Regenerative medicine consists of a wide range of treatments that support tissue repair and regeneration.

Regenerative therapies work by stimulating the body’s natural healing process, which can help people with musculoskeletal damage recover more quickly and without the use of pain medication.

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a type of injection shown to relieve pain and accelerate healing. PRP is derived from your blood so it’s a natural, drug-free treatment. Your blood consists of several different components including red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

Platelets play a major role in supporting healing throughout your body. When applied to areas of damaged tissue, PRP stimulates blood flow and provides certain growth factors that enhance the body’s healing process.

To prepare the injection, your doctor draws a small sample of blood from your arm. They then place the blood into a centrifuge, which spins the sample at high speeds. This process separates the different components of your blood. Your doctor then extracts the PRP and injects it into your affected area under local anesthesia.

PRP is a quick and simple process that requires little to no downtime. In most cases, your doctor completes the procedure in less than an hour.

Studies have indicated that PRP is or may be useful to treat:

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis).
  • Knee osteoarthritis (PRP is being combined with other options to lessen pain, improve function and possibly help repair cartilage.
  • Sports injuries such as pulled muscles, joint sprains or ligament tears.
  • Hair loss.

Most insurers do not cover this type of therapy.

To determine if you’re a good candidate, your doctor performs a thorough examination, including a physical exam and a discussion of your symptoms and medical history. In some cases, your doctor may perform additional tests like an X-ray or MRI.

After your diagnosis, your doctor determines the most effective treatment for your condition.

In some cases, your doctor may combine regenerative therapies with a number of other nonsurgical treatments as a part of your comprehensive treatment plan. To learn more about regenerative medicine, call the practice or book your appointment online today.
